Stanhope Heritage Museum
Algonquin Highlands, Ont.

History
Located in the Algonquin Highland, the Stanhope Heritage Museum is home to more than 140 years of records and artifacts, specializing in local pioneer history.
The building formerly housed the original Stanhope Council meeting. It could originally be found on Dominion Road in Stanhope and was built in the early 1900s. While the building held council meetings, it was also known to host the occasional square dance where the locals said the loggers - and their boots - made quite the impression.
By the 1960s, more room was needed for council. They moved chambers to another local building and the old hall as left abandoned. in 1995, Stanhope Council asked community volunteers to create a local museum. The old council hall was secured and relocated to where it now sits today.

Tarot Card Reading - Before Investigation
Your spread appears to be:
Card 1: Four of Swords Reversed – "Something Wants to Be Heard"
This card often suggests restlessness. In a paranormal context, it can point toward energy that has not fully settled. Rather than indicating anything negative, it feels like a location where history continues to "echo."
During your investigation you may find:
Card 2: Ten of Pentacles Reversed – "A Story of Change"
Museums preserve history, but this reversed card speaks of things no longer being where they once belonged.
That can symbolize:
Card 3: The Sun Reversed – "Not Everything Is Visible"
This is actually a positive ending. The Sun reversed doesn't suggest darkness—it suggests truths that are only partially revealed.
I would interpret this as:
Overall Paranormal Reading
This spread doesn't suggest a threatening or oppressive location. Instead, it feels like a place with layers of history waiting to be uncovered.
The strongest themes are:
- Four of Swords (Reversed)
- Ten of Pentacles (Reversed)
- The Sun (Reversed).
- Difficulty getting long periods of silence.
- Multiple small responses instead of one dramatic event.
- Spirits or residual energy that seem eager to interact rather than remain dormant.
Card 2: Ten of Pentacles Reversed – "A Story of Change"
Museums preserve history, but this reversed card speaks of things no longer being where they once belonged.
That can symbolize:
- Families or generations connected to the property.
- Objects that have been moved or relocated.
- Emotional ties to possessions or the land itself.
Card 3: The Sun Reversed – "Not Everything Is Visible"
This is actually a positive ending. The Sun reversed doesn't suggest darkness—it suggests truths that are only partially revealed.
I would interpret this as:
- You will likely gather evidence, but not all of it will make sense immediately.
- Some experiences may only become meaningful when reviewing audio or video afterward.
- The investigation may answer some questions while creating new ones.
Overall Paranormal Reading
This spread doesn't suggest a threatening or oppressive location. Instead, it feels like a place with layers of history waiting to be uncovered.
The strongest themes are:
- Historical connections rather than fear.
- Intelligent attempts at communication.
- Evidence that may be subtle during the investigation but stronger in post-review.
- Respect for the stories attached to the building and its artifacts will likely produce the best results.
Rachel's Experiences
Initial Thoughts
Nestled in the heart of the Algonquin Highlands, the Stanhope Heritage Museum is surrounded by everything that makes the area a perfect weekend getaway. Scenic lakes, quiet roads, charming cottages, and the peaceful atmosphere of cottage country create the ideal backdrop for exploring the region's history. Tucked away on a side road and hidden from the main highways, the museum is easy to miss if you aren't specifically looking for it.
My first impression was one of surprise. Based on the photographs I had seen beforehand, I expected the museum to be much larger than it actually was. While the building itself is relatively small, it quickly became apparent that size has nothing to do with the experience it offers. Every corner of the museum is filled with artifacts, photographs, displays, and historical information that beautifully showcase the growth and development of the Stanhope area. It is a museum that manages to be both intimate and incredibly captivating, offering visitors a fascinating glimpse into the lives of the people who helped shape the community.
Investigation Thoughts
From the moment our investigation began, it became clear that this was going to be an active evening. Almost immediately, we experienced what appeared to be communication and interaction through several pieces of equipment. The REM Pod activated early in the investigation, while the Spirit Talker app consistently produced words that were surprisingly relevant to both the location and the questions being asked.
One of our most intriguing experiments involved placing an EMF trip wire around the perimeter of the museum. Throughout the evening, it activated multiple times. To rule out environmental causes, we thoroughly checked every electrical outlet in the building to ensure they were not producing elevated electromagnetic fields. None were. I even replaced the batteries in the trip wire to eliminate the possibility of low-battery interference, yet the device continued to activate throughout the investigation.
The Ghost Box also provided several responses that repeatedly referenced words such as "look up," "ceiling," and "roof." As we surveyed the room, we noticed an old store sign belonging to Thomas Jones positioned high near the ceiling. Once our questions shifted specifically toward Thomas Jones and the sign itself, the activity noticeably increased. Both the K2 Meter and the EMF trip wire responded almost immediately, suggesting that our attention had shifted toward something—or someone—wanting to be acknowledged.
Later in the evening, Kaz and I conducted a dual Estes Method session while Chantel and Phil served as investigators, asking questions and documenting our responses. At the time, many of my answers felt random and disconnected. However, after reviewing the recorded footage, the responses fit together remarkably well with the questions that had been asked. The session appeared to revolve around Thomas Jones, who seemed determined to have his story heard and remembered.
Another compelling thread that emerged during the investigation involved references to three children who had been lost. Subsequent historical research allowed us to verify a tragic incident involving the drowning of three children whose father had ties to the community of Stanhope. It appeared that this was another story connected to the museum that wanted to be acknowledged and preserved.
As the investigation drew to a close, one final experience stood out when the music box activated, providing another unexpected moment of interaction before the evening came to an end.
After Thoughts
After spending the evening investigating the Stanhope Heritage Museum, I don't believe the location is haunted in the traditional sense of a place where spirits are constantly present, seeking to frighten visitors or create experiences on demand. Instead, I believe it is a place where spirits come and go—returning to check on the objects, buildings, and stories that once formed such an important part of their lives.
Of all the personalities that appeared to come forward during our investigation, Thomas Jones seemed to be the strongest presence. My impression is that he recognized why we were there: not to sensationalize the paranormal, but to listen, learn, and help preserve the stories of those who came before us. He appeared determined to ensure that his story wasn't overlooked, and many of our experiences throughout the evening seemed to support that possibility.
While every investigator will ultimately draw their own conclusions, many of the experiences we documented can reasonably be interpreted as the actions of spirits returning to visit a place that continues to tell their history. Rather than a location defined by fear, the Stanhope Heritage Museum feels like a place of remembrance, where history remains deeply connected to those who once lived it.
Perhaps the most remarkable aspect of the investigation is that, despite being the smallest location The Paranormal Seekers have ever investigated, it delivered some of the most compelling activity we have experienced. It truly proved that size has little to do with the potential for meaningful investigation.
Plans are already underway for a return visit, and I genuinely look forward to seeing what further stories may reveal themselves. Whether you're interested in local history, heritage, or the paranormal, the Stanhope Heritage Museum is a hidden gem that deserves a place on your summer travel list.

Kaz's Experiences
First impressions: “Holy cow, this place is tiny! This investigation is going to be over real quick!”
The couple who greeted us (And their dog) were very friendly and welcoming. Not knowing anything about the building, I wasn’t expecting much and the inside was so small I didn’t think there would be very much that we would collect in the way of evidence. We had a few blips and bleeps on the REM Pod but mostly everything was coming through via the Spirit Talker app.
The Este Method was done by myself in one corner and Rachel in the other corner. At the time, it didn’t appear like much was coming through. I had periods with long silences before the voices began to flow. Upon being tapped out, Philip and Chantel informed me that I had mentioned my left arm felt cold, as if someone was standing near me. I also mentioned the name Thomas Jones and then told Chantel to “look at the poster” the “one at the back”. I also mentioned “tap the glass”. To my left was a glass display containing items from Thomas Jones’ old business. There was also a poster that had a write-up about Thomas and his influence on the community. This was great!
The bell and REM POD both activated a few times, almost as if responding to our questioning.
The drive home was pretty cool with Canada Day fireworks going off right in front of and beside us.
Was a great investigation :)

Chantel's Experiences
Stanhope museum was truly one of the most intelligent spirits I ever encountered at any location.
For such a small space there was a lot of activity. Especially when Rachel and Kaz went under and did the Estes method. That's when we really got into talking and understanding one certain spirit who was trying to get our attention the whole time and didn't clue in until the Estes session. I don't want to spoil who I am talking about. This place is worth to go investigate and looking at the amazing history it offers.
