fairfield-gutzeit house

The sun was shining and the satellite radio was set to Hair Nation as the team made their way to a little town that was home to the building they were about to investigate. As they arrived to the downtown area, it was very clear that this was a town that was surrounded with history. We pulled into the parking lot and everyone was immediately taken back by how beautiful this location was. It was clear to us why the dead still wanted to be there. Who wouldn’t? We made our way up to the front and meet with our lovely host, Amanda. Our initial tour was about to begin.
The Fairfield-Gutzeit House is located right on the shore of the lake. It is a picturesque location that has an amazing history. Built in 1796 by two brothers, William Jr. and Benjamin Fairfield, it was a central part of history for the town. It was later sold and eventually ended up back in the hands of a Fairfield descendant – Mabel Fairfield-Gutzeit and her husband, Dr. William H. Gutzeit. Upon her passing, the house was left to the parks commission and eventually turned into the historical site it is today. We were also told about the strange happenings at the house – Apparitions of a man, cupboard doors being found open when no one has been in the house, and even the sounds of disembodied voices.
As we toured the property, we were told of the history of the Fairfield family. The house was built by William Jr. and Benjamin, but it was Benjamin who lived in the house with his wife and children. Later on, when Mabel and Dr. Gutzeit obtained ownership, they had held a lot of social gatherings. Mabel was also very much into dogs and had Samoyed Huskies. Petey was her favourite and she had him buried (with a monument) on the property. We also ventured over to the Lafarage War of 1812 Discovery Centre, which is on the same property and was once the old Boathouse. We meet up with a gentleman named Dave, who is literally a walking, talking encyclopedia of the entire town of Bath. Dave’s historical knowledge is incredible and his stories about the history of the town and its citizens (past and present) is impeccable. We could have sat there and listened to him all night, but we had an investigation to conduct.

We returned to our vehicles to gather our equipment and began to set up. The DVR system was set up in the places where there had been strange activity reported. Once that system was recording, the team split into smaller groups and began to investigate. Sean headed into the basement area; Jay, Jim and Lisa stayed in the main house; Rachel and Susan headed outside, to the porch that faced the water.
The property had its fair share of strange occurrences, including the porch area. It was here that two volunteers, at different times, had heard a little girl say “Don’t tell them I’m here”. This was unnerving to these volunteers since neither could find a source for the voice. Rachel and Susan made their way up the ramp and took a seat on the bench facing the water. “You could fall asleep out here. It’s so peaceful,” said Rachel. “Is there anybody out here with us right now?” she asked. All was quiet but the loons on the lake. “Is there a little girl out here with us? You can make the K2 here go off or you can speak into any of our devices,” stated Rachel. The Ovilus then spoke the first word of the evening – ‘Fifteen’. “What does fifteen mean? Your age? Something else?” asked Susan. Again, everything was quiet except for the wildlife. “Was this your home?” asked Rachel. Susan followed with another question. “Can you tell us your name?” she asked. The two of them sat in silence for a while before a giant splash was heard. “I don’t know what that was,” said Rachel. “A sea monster?” Susan joked. “The Loch Ness is coming to get us,” Rachel joked back. “It was probably a duck or a fish,” she went on to say. Susan agreed. Rachel then took it one step further. “Or a dead person coming to get us,” she said. “I was thinking that,” Susan nervously joked. The two sat quiet for a while before deciding on trying a P-SB 7 ghost box session. Rachel turned the device on and was getting to ask a question when the Ovilus spoke – ‘Hide’. “Hide!” Susan exclaimed. “What?” said Rachel. “Hide!” Susan said with excitement. “We heard you like to hide. We heard you said ‘Don’t tell them where I am’. We’re listening. We have lots of time. We aren’t here to hurt ya,” said Susan. “Can you tell us what your name is?” Rachel asked. “Is there a little girl out here with us?” she continued. A male voice is heard – ‘Oh my’. “Sounded like ‘oh my’,” said Rachel. “Little girl, are you out here with us? Is there anybody out here with us?” she continued. There was no answer on the ghost box, but the K2 meter began to light up. It was noted that it had indicated 3 colours. “Can you do that again, please and thank you?” asked Susan. The K2 responded by once again lighting up. “Whoever is here with us can you tell us your name? “ asked Rachel “I’m Susan,” said Susan. The K2 lit up. “I’m Rachel, and your name is?” questioned Rachel. No responses were heard. “We would really like to know your name so we can address you,” said Rachel. “Or you can tell us whatever. It’s okay,” Susan followed. “Can you make that thing on the ground light up again please?” she asked. The voice of child was heard over the ghost box, but neither could figure out what it said. A female voice was then heard – “Hi Sue”. “Did you just say Hello to me?” asked Susan. “If you’re still here with us can you make the K2 light up again?” Rachel asked. No response. Rachel and Susan decided to try the AM frequency, but after a few questions with no responses, it was switched back to the FM frequency. “I’m getting a chill,” Rachel noted out loud. “I seen lights over there,” Susan said, pointing towards the lake. “I was seeing lights over there too, but I figured they were just fireflies,” commented Rachel. “Maybe, I don’t know,” answered Susan. Rachel then began to take notice of something she was seeing out of the corner of her eye. “I keep thinking someone is standing over there though,” she said, pointing towards the accessibility ramp. “But it’s probably just that bush,” she reasoned. “Don’t scare me,” Susan said nervously. “Is William Jr. or Benjamin here with us?” Rachel asked. A male voice was heard on the ghost box – ‘Storm’. “Did it say storm?” asked Rachel. “We did drive by that place,” responded Susan. “Ya, Storms Corners,” Rachel replied. A female voice was then heard – ‘Asshole’. “That didn’t sound like a nice word,” Rachel said. The two asked more questions, but no more responses were head. It was decided to end the session. “Okay, I don’t want to freak you out, but if I look straight, but slightly to the right, I can see someone standing there,” Rachel said. Susan began to get nervous. “No you can’t,” she said. “Yes, I can,” replied Rachel. “It’s a man. Out of the corner of my eye. By the end. He’s standing there, watching us,” stated Rachel. “If you’re standing there, can you make a noise?” she asked. Right after, a loon called out. “The duck doesn’t count. Can you bang on the porch or something?” asked Rachel. But nothing was heard. “He’s coming closer,” stated Rachel. “Fuck, you serious?” said Susan. “Yes. He’s coming closer. This is strange. I never see this,” said Rachel. “Just stay there,” she said into the dark. “Are you touching my hair?” Susan asked with a quiver in her voice. “I’m not touching your hair,” responded Rachel. “He’s standing there, watching us. Probably wondering what the hell we are doing,” she said. Rachel then tries to get Susan to see what she is seeing. “And you look and there is nothing,” she said to her. At this point, Rachel and Susan believe they hear someone coming around the building. They wait patiently for one of the team members to be visible, but no one comes. Rachel goes back to seeing if she can still see the shadow figure but it is now gone. “Is it still there?” asks Susan. “No. No, it’s gone,” says Rachel. “Alright, we are gonna go in the house now. This is your last chance,” she says. “Thank you very much,” Susan states. With the session now ended, Rachel and Susan grab their equipment and headed back into the house. “Weird,” Rachel states. “So strange,” she says as they make there way back inside.

With the session now ended, Rachel and Susan grab their equipment and headed back into the house. “Weird,” Rachel states. “So strange,” she says as they make there way back inside.
Back in the house, Rachel and Susan take a moment to update Amanda and Dave about what they had experience outside. When describing the tall, male like shadow figure Rachel had seen, Dave was rather quick to let them know about an individual that had fit that description. The ramp, where Rachel was seeing the figure, was built for this individual to allow them to enjoy the house when they could no longer get around without an assisted device. It was nice to get validation on both ends. The team decided to take a small break and when they returned, they headed upstairs to the second floor.
During our initial tour of the house Jim, Susan and Jay had all felt a ringing sensation in their ears when they had entered the upstairs bathroom. The most interesting part is that all three had gone upstairs at separate times and had no idea what the other had had felt. Rachel and Susan decided to stick together again and head to the second floor. There was no question as to where to place the REM pod. The K2 meter was also placed near the bathroom as well. The two got situated and began their investigation. “Is anybody up here with us? It’s okay if you are,” said Rachel. “If you’re up here with us, can you make the REM Pod in the bathroom go off? Or even the K2 like it was outside?” she said. They waited, but no indications. “Can you talk to us?” asked Rachel. A male voice coming from the main floor was heard. “Hello?” said Jim. It was perfectly timed and we all had a good laugh, but quickly went back into investigation mode. “I know there is someone up here,” said Susan. The Ovilus spoke – ‘Glance’. “What are you looking for or at?” asked Rachel. “Where would you like us to look?” Susan asked shortly after. “It’s okay, you don’t have to be afraid of us,” Rachel stated. Susan agreed. Everything seemed to be quiet. Rachel panned around the room, and into what would have been the master bedroom. “My name is Rachel. I know you had a daughter, Benjamin, with the same name,” she said. “Do you have anything to say to us?” asked Susan. “Make one of those devices go off,” said Susan. The Ovilus spoke again – ‘Fifteen’. “Again?” Rachel asked. “What does it mean?” questioned Susan. “1815? 1915?” Rachel asked. “Can you give us a clue?” asked Susan. The two waited, but nothing was noted. “We’d really appreciate if you made the REM Pod go off,” said Rachel. “We like to show Vanessa that is goes off without her,” she continued. “Make all the pretty colours go off. All you gotta do is go near it,” stated Susan. “Maybe you can make a noise? A bang, knock, scratch. You can make it in any room. Any time. Any sound,” Rachel said. It was then that the REM Pod activated. Rachel and Susan were shocked, but thrilled. They both thanked whomever had done it. The Ovilus also spoke again – ‘Cesium’. “Can you do that again?” Susan asked. But the devices remained silent. Rachel went through a list of names, to see if any of them would trigger a response. Nothing was noted. It was then decided to try a P-SB7 ghost box session, but not before Rachel felt something brush up against her. “Something just touched my butt, leg,” she said. “Nope, it’s not the wall,” she stated. “Did you just touch me?” Rachel asked. “Make one of the devices light up for yes,” stated Susan. “Why is everything happening to me tonight? I’m a little weirded out,” Rachel said. Rachel spent the next few minutes trying to figure out if there was a natural cause for this sensation, but could not find a single source or cause. “Do you like me or something?” she asked. “Is that why you’re showing yourself to me tonight? I’m okay with it,” she said. It was decided to get the ghost box session underway. “If you’re up here with us, making the REM Pod go off, touching my leg, I’d like to know your name?” Rachel asked. A male voice is heard – ‘You’. “Did you use to live here?” asked Rachel. “Mabel, you up here with us?” questioned Rachel. A older, female voice is heard – ‘Yes’. “Where you the one that set off the green light over there Mabel?” asked Rachel. The same female voice is heard – ‘Sorry’. “Don’t be sorry,” said Rachel. “We like it when you that,” followed Susan. “We wish you would do it again,” continued Rachel. “We just want to talk to you. To be friendly and all,” Susan stated. A male voice is now heard – ‘Yeah’. “Do you like us in your house?” asked Rachel. A female voice is heard, but unintelligible. “Is there a little girl up here with us?” asked Rachel. “Just go close to one of those two boxes,” said Susan. It was then that the REM Pod activated again. Rachel, noticing that the devices seem to be activating when Susan would ask questions, encouraged her to continue. “Keep asking, Susan,” she said. A male voice is heard through the ghost box – ‘Wait’. The REM Pod then activated again. “Oooh, that’s great!” exclaimed Susan. “It just said ‘wait’ and then it started again!” Rachel said with excitement. At this point, Lisa had come up to join Rachel and Susan. “Can you show Lisa how you made it go off?” asked Rachel. The Ovilus spoke – ‘Ship’. “Oooh that’s so cool!” Susan exclaimed. “Benjamin and William Jr. are you here with us, communicating?” Rachel asked. “Did the two of you build a ship together?” she went on. A male voice is heard – ‘Yup’. “What did you call it? The Two what?” asked Rachel. “Then there was another once called the three something,” Susan added. A male voice is heard – ‘Brothers’. It was true. The Fairfield brothers had built a ship that was called The Two Brothers, and later on, built another called The Three Brothers. “You’re absolutely right! Wow that’s amazing!” Susan said excitedly. “We really appreciate you talking to us. And same to you Mabel,” Rachel said. “Mabel, we loved the dogs you had. Samoyed Huskies are very beautiful,” said Rachel. “We were told your favourite dog is buried our front. Can you tell us what his name was?” asked Susan. A female voice is heard – ‘Petey’. “It said Petey!” Rachel exclaimed. “That’s right,” Susan responded. “That’s the dog’s name!” Rachel said. It was then noted that the K2 meter was lighting up and the Ovilus followed with a word – ‘Draw’. Rachel and Susan try to communicate with Mabel some more, but asking her to light up a device when Rachel gets to the number of dogs she once had. But everything remained quite. “Who’s still up here with us right now? Can you tell us your name?” asked Rachel. A female voice is heard – ‘No’. Sean had now joined the girls on the second floor. “Sean is up here now. Can you show him you’re here with us? Just one light is fine,” asked Rachel. A male voice is heard – ‘Four’. “Four? That would be fantastic,” said Rachel. “Gran the antenna on it, that’s standing up, and make it scream,” she said. A voice is heard – ‘I can’t do it’. “Did it say ‘I can’t do it’?” Rachel questioned. “Are you getting tired?” asked Susan. A female voice is heard – ‘Maybe’. “Are you the one who sets off the alarm here in the middle of the night?” Rachel asked. “Do you open the cupboard doors in the hallway?” added Susan. The Ovilus spoke – ‘Past’. As they filmed a little more, Rachel thought she had seen something scurry across the floor in the bathroom, behind the REM Pod. She had seen it with her eyes and described it as a blob of light, but the camera did not catch anything. “We are going to take a break, you’re more than welcome to join us,” Rachel stated. A male voice is heard – ‘Okay’. With that, the team ended the session and returned to the main floor. Rachel and Susan once again shared their experiences with Amanda and Dave. Dave seemed flabbergasted and validated by the responses that had been received.

Dave seemed flabbergasted and validated by the responses that had been received.
After a quick break, the team returned to the second floor. Due to the amount of communication received earlier, they wanted to see if they could get any more. This time, Jim and Amanda joined Rachel and Susan. Jim suggested that the REM Pod be placed in the smaller front storage room, as he had felt a lot of movement in that area. As we got settled, and turned on the P-SB7, the Ovilus spoke – ‘France’. Amanda was quick to validate. Some of the painting in the house originated from France. The ghost box began to make a strange, unusual noise. “Ooh, strange. Are you causing interference on the ghost box?” asked Rachel. “Ya, are you doing this to our ghost box?” followed Susan. A male voice is heard – ‘Yup’. “Who’s up here with us right now?” Rachel asked next. “Please make those lights go off,” said Susan. “You can do it, can’t you?” said Jim. “I know you’re in there. Go near it. You’re right there,” he said. Rachel thinks she hears what sounds like ‘wrong room’ come through the ghost box. “That would be funny,” replied Susan. “Are you scared?” asked Jim. “If you make all those lights go off, I will run down stairs,” he said. Rachel then notes that she keeps hearing the same woman’s voice over the ghost box, but she doesn’t know what she is saying. “Come on, you can talk to us, please,” said Susan. The K2 Meter lights up. “It’s going off,” said Rachel. “Thank you!” said Susan. “Can you make all the colours go off?” asked Rachel. “Can you go over and make the REM Pod go off?” Rachel asked next. Three voices were heard coming through the ghost box – ‘Ready’ (male), ‘Set’ (male), ‘Hey’ (female). “I seriously thought it was going to say ready, set, go,” said Rachel. “I’m ready. I’m set. Now make it go!” exclaimed Rachel. But nothing happened. “Do you want us to put the round one back in the bathroom?” asked Susan. Jim then passed the REM Pod to Rachel, who placed it back in the bathroom. “Can you make the REM Pod go off again, like you did the last time?” asked Rachel. A female voice is heard – ‘Yes’. “Mabel, if that’s you, can you make it go off again? One or two colours?” she continued. But the device remained silent. “Can you maybe say the name of someone standing up here right now?” she asked. Nothing was heard. “Do you know what my name is?” questioned Rachel. A male voice is heard – ‘Yes’. “What’s my name then?” she asked. A voice is heard – ‘Ra Chel’. “It said Ra-Chel,” Susan exclaimed. “Can you say it again so I can hear it?” Rachel asked. This time, the Ovilus spoke – ‘Hi’. “Hi! I’d like to hear my name come across that ghost box,” stated Rachel. But it was quiet. “Can you tell us again what you use to buld?” asked Rachel. The Ovilus spoke again – ‘Type’. “Type of what? Please” asked Susan. But again, no response. More questions were asked, but no audible responses. “We have to go soon, so we would really like it if you would light up one of those lights in the bathroom,” Susan asked. What sounds like a female voice is heard – ‘I did’. “Are you tired? Do you want us to leave?” asked Rachel. “Do you want us to go or stay? Or would you like us to come back?” she went on to ask. The REM Pod activated. “That’s great! Thank you!” exclaimed Susan. The Ovilus spoke another word – ‘Foliage’. “Do you want us to come back and check out the foliage?” asked Rachel. “There were people here gardening today,” Amanda stated. “My device just said grass and strawberries,” added Jim. A few more questioned were asked, but everything remained quiet. “Do you have anything you would like to tell us?” Rachel asked. The Ovilus spoke – ‘Soldiers’ “Are you a solider?” asked Rachel. “Do you remember seeing the soldiers?” Susan followed. Again, the ghost box lets out a similar noise as it had earlier. “Is that you causing interference?” asked Rachel. But there was no response. “Do you have anything to say to us before we leave for the evening?” questioned Rachel. “Can you do one more thing for us before we leave, please?” followed Susan. A female voice is heard – ‘A drink’. “A drink?” questioned Rachel. “Are you gonna give us a drink?” she asked. But no responses were heard. Any forms of communication seemed to distinguish and the house returned to a quiet state. Our time at the location had come to an end. We returned to the main floor and began to pack up the equipment and say our good byes’. We could not wait to get home to review our footage to see what we had got.
The Fairfield-Gutzeit House is located about an hour and forty-five minutes from Oshawa, in a little town that modern society had seemed to bypass. Most, if not all buildings are original in design and have a rich history to go with it. We highly suggest taking the drive and visiting the area, especially the Lafarge War of 1812 Discovery Centre. And while you’re there, take the time to listen to Dave and his vast knowledge of all things the town has been through. You never know, you may just have an encounter with the past that will leaving you wanting to know more.
