Prince Edward Heights - Picton
***PLEASE NOTE***
This building was once owned by the Canadian Military and then it was bought by the Ontario Government and turned into a institution for the "Mentally Retarded". Contrary to what other paranormal teams have said, this place was NEVER an asylum for those with mental issues (such as schizophrenia, etc) OR the criminally insane. We have many first hand accounts from previous employees of the former hospital as to what actually happened and occurred on the premises.
January 2014
Nothing had prepared us for what our eyes were currently looking at. To say the building was creepy would be quite the understatement. Abandoned, run down and surrounded by basically nothing, this former hospital for the mentally handicapped was more than what we had ever imagined. Eerie would be more of a correct word to use to describe what we stood in front of. And the insides would prove to be a lot more than that.
Located in picturesque Picton, Ontario, on top of what the locals refer to as “The Hill”, sits a slightly abandoned building that was once home to many individuals that were classified as “mentally retarded”. In its heyday, Prince Edward Heights was a destination for those who needed the help. Purchased from the military in 1970, Prince Edward Heights was in operation until 1999. It was then left as a landmark to fall into disrepair. It was purchased by new owners a few years back and turned into what we can only describe as “one heck of a paintball facility”.
As we stood there, looking at what we were about to enter, one could feel that we were being looked back at. The feeling of being watched is very apparent upon arrival and is one of the experiences that people have had at the location.
We entered the “main door” of the building that appeared to be more of school like facility. We decided to head to our right first, which lead us down a long hallway with rooms on both sides. These rooms seem to have office like appearances. Each individual room had its own creepy feel. Though nothing seemed to be creepy enough to make us rethink our positions. As we neared the end of the hallway, the feeling had somewhat changed. There is a small room to our left that was giving off a very heavy feeling. Unsure of what it once was, we decided to return to do an EVP and ghost box session after we had explored the rest of the main floor.
We now made our way through the corridor into the middle of the facility. This is where the kitchen and dining room would have been located. Sure enough, both rooms are still there and present. The dining room no longer hold tables and chairs, but the kitchen still has all of the large appliances front and centre. Huge mixers, ovens and steel counters sit eerily still and frozen in time. Even though they are riddled with paint splatters, you can still picture them when they were in their prime, working away to make (hopefully) delicious meals for residences and staff. According to reports there has been activity reported in this area. We marked this as another place to come back and do an EVP and ghost box session.
We now made our way into a section which we believed was the residence of the patients who had once lived there. There were bars placed along the walls, like a hospital, which would allow those with limited mobility to grab on to. There were rooms with large, deep bath tubs. Other rooms had 4 small closets, which coincided with our research that patients were housed 4 in a room. The 1970’s wallpaper was still peeling off the walls in some areas. Even though the place has not been in operation for 15 years, you still get the feeling of being in a medical supervised environment. We visited numerous rooms but had no feelings of anything out of the ordinary.
As we made our way back down the hallway towards another main building we had to be super careful. The 1970’s style flooring was slick and ice covered. We walked in single file, taking our time so we would not slip. Last in line was Rachel as she as holding the flash light to make sure everyone in front of her could see. Not even a couple seconds into making their way down the hall, Rachel felt someone touch her left shoulder. It was as if someone was either trying to get her attention or they were placing their hand on her shoulder so they wouldn’t get lost. Rachel described the touch as gentle and didn’t feel any fear or harm in it.
We continued our exploration and ended up at what we believe was the main reception for those coming into the hospital. We stopped at what appeared to be the main reception desk and set up for a quick EVP and ghost box session. This was the first time using our new piece of equipment – an P-SB7 Spirit Box. We started the session asking if any one was with us. No reply. We asked a handful of more questions and got some responses, but could not make out exactly what was being said. Rachel finally asked if whomever was there wanted us to leave. It was at this point that we got a very clear response. “Leave It” was what it said. And that’s exactly what we did. We left the area we were in and headed back into the direction of the kitchen where we planned to do the next ghost box session.
We entered the kitchen and began our second ghost box session. Again, there appeared to be some responses but nothing we could clearly make out. As we concluded our session, Rachel asked if someone could hold on to the equipment as her fingers were feeling frozen. At this point, we captured an EVP that appears to be calling someone a “Bitch”. This disembodied voice seems to overlap Rachel’s and does not seem to be pleasant in any way.
After the session in the kitchen, we decided to make our way back to a room at the west side of the building that had given us an uncomfortable feeling at the beginning of the walk through. As we made our way through the hallways and corridors, Rachel noticed an area that looked like it had held an old pay phone. As she mentioned this to the group, our audio recorded captured another EVP. This time, it appears that the disembodied voice says “Yeah”. As it is agreeing with Rachel on what use to be an old pay phone booth.
We entered into a room that we think use to be an old staff room. It had a small kitchenette (complete with old microwave and dishwasher) and an area that you would assume have had table and chairs set up. We gathered around to begin our final ghost box session for the evening. This session was very interactive. We asked if anyone was with us in the room. We got a clear response of “Paul”. When we asked how old ‘Paul’ was, we received a response of “seven”. The next two voices to come through were different. Both had the same message for us “Get Out”. Both came from a male, but each had different tones. This is why we believe it is from two different entities. We continued on with our questions not really realizing that we had just been told to “get out” twice (only found the clear voices afterwards when going through the audio). Rachel then asked if whomever was with us was using our energy. “Yes” is the response that was received through the P-SB7. A few more questions were asked, but nothing came through that we could distinguish at the time (during review, we have a male spirit saying “Rachel” right before we end our session, that we did not acknowledge when we were there ). As Rachel ended the session, a male voice comes through and says “Good Bye”.
Good Bye seemed appropriate at the time. We decided that the upper floors were meant to be explored when the weather was warmer, and the dangers of ice and slippery spots were no longer present. We gathered our equipment, said our goodbyes and headed home with the promise to return.
Please keep in mind that this facility is on private property and it is not safe to venture out on your own without the permission of the property owner. Prince Edward Heights is still in strong form today, but its patients and staff may be long gone, or so one thinks.
**Shortly after reviewing our audio, we attempted to put it on the computer so we could post on the website. At first, our audio program refused to work. After a couple of days and a lot of hair pulling, we finally were able to get the program to work again. It was at this point that Rachel’s audio recorder, the one with all of the recordings, decided not to work. To this day, the recorder still will not turn on. We are quite upset that we cannot share the recordings we captured during our first visit. We hope that during our next visit we can capture some more on a new recorder. **

VISIT #2
May 3, 2014
The drive east was gray, gloomy and wet. The rain began shortly after leaving Oshawa and stayed with us the entire way to Picton. As we rounded the hill to the location we would be once again investigating, the rain subsided. The sky cleared and the sun came out. Water is a great conductor of energy, but conducting an investigation in the rain isn’t the greatest, especially when it is outdoors. The sunshine was a welcomed evening feature and a huge change since our last visit to this location.
Prince Edward Heights looks completely different in the spring and daylight. Our last trip up to this location was in January. It was way below freezing and had snowed a few days before. It was also still getting dark out at 5pm, so we had never seen this location in daylight. This investigation allowed us to see how everything looked in the light, and it was less terrifying than we had previously thought. We pulled into the gates and headed towards what once was the hospital. We parked in front and began to off load our equipment. There were some other people there at that time taking a walk through the halls of the old building. We decided to wait before heading in, just so we didn’t run into someone or had any of our footage contaminated. We waited about a half hour, and discussed a variety of different things. The clouds began to blow back in and it looked like rain was on the way again. We figured this was our signal that all was clear on the inside and we headed in.
We entered into the same area we did the first time we investigated. We walked the halls until we entered the kitchen. Here we decided to set up a static night vision camera that would record the kitchen area while we investigated the rest of the building. After we finished set up, we headed to the east end of the building. Here, we ended up splitting up into 2 groups. Jay and Colin went to the second floor, while the 4 girls – Rachel, Paula, Susan and Vanessa – remained on the main floor. Rachel, Paula, Susan and Vanessa investigated each room on the main floor and found some pretty interesting things. We found an old tub that had an old lift in it that would be used to lift patients in and out. It would by no means pass today’s standards. We also found a wall, at the end of a hallway, that people had written on. “Special Care/Infirmary…DEAD September 30, 1997” was written above the door frame. Written underneath was “United We Stood…” and “May All Our Care Not Be Forgotten”. A list of names and dates where written down the wall like roll call. These names and dates were of those who had worked at Prince Edward Heights and the last day of their employment before the doors where forever closed on the institution. It was a sad reminder of how this building was once home to some and a workplace to others.
The girls decided to head to the second floor. Jay and Colin had already returned to the first floor and we had all convened before we went our separate ways. Jay and Colin said they were heading to the other floors on the west side of the building which would mean that the girls would be the only ones in the east side of the building. Upon entering the second level, the girls noticed a lot of glow sticks, still glowing away. Upon further inspection, it looked like they were being used to show where the doors were. It was also at this time that we thought we could hear someone walking and talking. Susan, being the one who gets scared quite easily sometimes, heard a noise she could not figure out what it was. Setting her off in a panic, she screamed and ran towards the closest person to hide behind. This happened to be Rachel. After a minute or so of laughing and calming her down, we all realized that the noise Susan was hearing was just a piece of caution tape, blowing in the breeze, down a dark hallway. We decided to venture down this dark hallway and see what we could find. The rooms were all similar to the other floors. Someone had written on the wall “The Dead Still Walk These Halls”. Rachel thought it was very fitting and was wondering if whomever had wrote that out believes that or was just trying to make it seem much scarier to those playing paintball. Next, we headed down the other hallway that had the glow sticks laying on the floor. We walked halfway down the hallway and stopped. The sounds of someone walking behind us is what caught our attention first. However, no one was there. Rachel then thought she could hear men talking. Discussing something. Then we could hear what sounded like someone walking behind us. We investigated a bit more and then headed back down stairs to find the guys and see if they were anywhere close to where the voices and footsteps where heard.
As we were making our way back towards the kitchen, we had to stop. As we stood quietly in the hallway, we all could hear what sounded like people talking and kids playing. At one point Rachel swears she could hear someone laughing. Rachel also heard what sounded like a man and footsteps somewhere close. It was at this point that Vanessa said that she heard a buzzing sound that literally went from ear to ear. Rachel also described how she could hear someone crying. But not a normal cry. It was a sad type of cry, like weeping. **Afterwards when we were discussing this event we thought that maybe we were hearing the coyotes in the background. Also we had to keep in mind that the individuals that were housed at the hospital where considered ‘mentally retarded’ and would not have the mental capacity higher than that of a child.**
We made their way back to where we had entered the building. After we had crossed the threshold into the west wing, Vanessa said that she had to stop, as she was feeling dizzy. She described it to us as her equilibrium was completely off. We waited a few minutes while Vanessa collected herself and was able to move again. We decided to meet up with the guys and see how everything was going. They guys were on the third floor, so that’s where we headed. The guys also had had some experiences while investigating the same areas as we did. Jay and Colin had both agreed that they had also heard a group of people talking in the same spot in the hallway as the girls had. They also said they could hear a couple of people talking on the upper floor of the east wing in the hallway where the glow sticks where – The same area that Rachel said she could hear men talking. Jay also went on to say that he had heard a little girl, and two women talking in the kitchen when they got close to it. On the second floor of the west wing they could hear a man talking, as well as footsteps. Both Jay and Colin also described smelling a cigar. As a group, we decided to head back to the main floor and outside for a break and to regroup. On the main floor, before exiting the building, Rachel described how she walked through a really strong perfume smell. It was weird, but it had dissipated just as quickly as it had appeared.
After the break, the group decided that now would be a good time to revisit the areas that members had felt some activity or had experiences in. Our first area of interest was the kitchen. We all entered the kitchen and got ready to do an EVP/Ghost Box session. Rachel turned the P-SB7 on and we began. After asking many questions, and doing both a forward and reverse sweep, we did not get a single response. We all came to the conclusion that the kitchen was not an active area that night and headed towards to next location – the main foyer in the East Wing. We decided to hold the session in the same area that we did the first time we visited the facility. Rachel turned the ghost box on. Before anyone could ask a question a male voice came through. It sounds like this voice says “Paula” or “Colin”. It is very hard to distinguish as it was said very fast. “If there is anybody with us here can you tell us your name?” Rachel asked. A female voice popped up “Sure”. When asked what her name was, there was no response. Rachel continued asking questions. “What room do you live in?” she asked. Two separate voices came through, one was clearly a man’s voice but both said the same “Four”. Some more questions were asked and some responses were heard but are unintelligible (will need further review) and then the responses ceased.
The team headed to the west side of the building, to the last room on the right hand side on the main floor. This was the same room that they had connected with a spirit named “Paul” on the first visit. “Anyone in here with us tonight?” asked Rachel. An unintelligible male voice is heard. As we stood in the dark, with the P-SB7 sweeping through the channels, the voice of a small child comes through. The voice says one of two things, either “Help Me” or “Mommy”. Either way it was disturbing to hear. Rachel shakes of the voice and continues asking questions. “Do you remember us?” she asks. A female voice comes through, but we can’t make out what she is saying. “Can you say the name of someone in this room?” Rachel asked next. A male voice comes through – “Hazel” (Also sounds like ‘Rachel’). The team asked more questions, but no responses. We decided to head to the upper floors and see if anyone wanted to talk to us up there.
We headed to the third floor. We walked to the far end of the hall where there was a desk. It appeared that this desk was kind of like a reception desk for that floor. It was here that all of us could smell what we thought was wood burning. Again, as quickly as the smell appeared, it disappeared. We began our ghost box session. “Can you tell us your name?” Rachel asked. “Peter” said a male voice. “Is there anything you want to say?” Rachel continued. A male voice came through “No”. A female voice was also heard – “Yes”. When asked what it was, there was no response. “Are you hiding from us?” Rachel asked. A very clear voice came through, “Yes”. We just can’t figure out if it is a male or female voice. Shortly after a male voice comes through, twice. It is very apparent that it is the same male voice, but what he is saying is unintelligible. Rachel continues to ask questions. “Are we safe?” A female voice comes through – “No”. “Who is not the safest right now?” probes Rachel. “Susan” comes across the ghost box. Of course, being the most easily freaked out one of the group, Susan starts show a little nervousness. Wanting to know a bit more about this situation, Rachel continues her questioning. “Do you like Susan?” A male voice comes through “She’s alright”. Susan pipes up “I like you too”. We had a good chuckle and continued to ask questions. “Are you shy?” Rachel asks next. An unintelligible female voice comes through. That was the last of the voices for that evening. We asked more questions, but nothing came through. All seemed to be quiet now. It was also getting late and with everything dying down (no pun intended), we decided that it was best to say our goodbyes once again and head to the local Tim Hortons to warm up a bit and talk about our experiences.
We will be returning to PRZ/PEH in early August. This time, you can join us! We will be hosting Paranormal Paintball 2014 – Come Get Slimed! This will be a day full of fun paintballing, followed by an investigation of the location when the sun goes down. This is a paid event and space is limited! So if you are interested, check out our Event page on our website. Costs, date, times and other information is listed for you! Hope to see you there!
