“I hope this rain holds off, though a thunderstorm would really make this an interesting evening,” Rachel said as she drove along the back-country roads. The truck was fully loaded with the team and equipment. As she navigated the bends, the ominous feeling was growing as the team got closer and closer to the destination. “It should be coming up on the right,” Rachel said. Before they knew it, they had pulled into the overgrown driveway. The old house stood in front of us. Neither of us could figure out the right words to describe it. It was even more hauntingly in person than the photos that Rachel had found. Everyone, but Sheena, was feeling quite anxious about this investigation, and the outside of this location exasperated that feeling. We could only imagine was the inside was like and what stories it wanted to tell.
Located in Northumberland County, this location was, and is, a private residence. It was built sometime in the middle to late 1800s (even the Historical Society couldn’t give an exact build date). Even the local Mutton family had owned the property at some point. Through out the years, the house and land would see numerous owners and tenants. The last owners/tenants lived in the house up until March, even though the house looks likes it has been sitting abandoned. The house was sold and the new owners took possession in late Spring.
As we sat in the truck, looking up at the large house in front of us, one of the owners arrived. Some of the team members got out of the truck to introduce themselves. Rachel and Lisa remained in the front seat for a few moments. “So, I’m going to change the channel, and whatever song is on is how our night is going to be,” Rachel said to Lisa. “Okay…” Lisa trailed off. Rachel turned the channel on her XM and the song ‘Like A G6’. Rachel started laughing. Lisa was slightly amused because she knew that this investigation would be like no other. Rachel and Lisa exited the vehicle and greeted the owner. Cindy was thrilled have the team come up and investigate. She described that when they had purchased the house a couple family members had similar experiences in on of the upper rooms, at separate times. In true fashion, our newest member Ryan wanted to talk more about the location with the owner, and within minutes realized he had known her husband from his previous line of work. After quick call to her husband to let him know who was investigating, we decided that it was now time to head into the house.
The team entered through a side door that brought them into the kitchen. Surprisingly, the house still had running water and electricity, but the idea of flushing a toilet or turning on a light was anxiety producing. Cindy indicated that this was “clean”, and that the previous owners/tenants had cleaned the residence before moving out. The team decided that this was a good time to do a walk through, while it was still light outside.
“Smells like ex-smokers,” Lisa said as she walked in the side door. “So, this is like a second kitchen?” asked Alison. “Yes,” replied Cindy. “Eventually it will be an in-law suite kitchen,” she added. The team spread out a little to investigate their surroundings. “I hope you can find the room. I let my daughter lead the ay and she walked in, took two steps, crossed her arms over her chest and backed out,” Cindy said. “Do you know why?” Lisa questioned. “Why?” Cindy asked. “Because, when there is negative, you should never put your back to it,” Lisa answered. “Yup, we never did,” added Cindy. Rachel, Lisa and Sheena then walk about the kitchen. To the one side there was a bathroom. All three poked their head in to take a look. There was a burned-out cigarette butt sitting on the counter. It was clearly left there to burn out. There were also old medication pill bottles left in the cupboard with the former owner’s name on them. It was clear to us that this individual had some serious heart issues. “This house has the potential to be gorgeous,” said Lisa. “The cupboards remind me of my grandma’s kitchen,” she added. “Hey! There’s mustard!” exclaimed Alison, as she opened a cupboard door. “What the hell is with the nails?” ask Lisa and she was looking at the one wall. “It must have held something, like a sheet,” answered Rachel. Fred then arrived at the location. Within moments, Ryan and Fred were catching up and filling each other in on what has been going on at their previous place of employment and their personal lives. “She’s a beaut!” Lisa said sarcastically to Fred. “They looked like they lived to high standards,” she added with a smirk. “They did!” Fred said with a laugh. “So, you’re into buying haunted houses now,” Ryan joked. “This house has huge potential for sure,” Lisa repeated as the ladies left the gentleman to finish catching up. The ventured through the doorway and into the hallway and to the room on their left. “Oh, three layers of wallpaper,” said Rachel. You could see how each layer of wallpaper indicated the years it was more than likely laid – the 70s and the 80s. They then made their way to the base of the staircase and in front of what looked like the Living Room. “We were looking at the wood carvings,” said Alison. “They are so non-traditional,” she added, pointing to the intricated carvings. Lisa took a step into the living room. “What is this?” she questioned, pointing to the floor. “Um, Mud?” Rachel questionably answered back. “Ugh, I don’t think so…” Lisa replied, trailing off. “If this house was cleaned up, I would live in it,” Rachel said as the now ascended the staircase. “I think most of this is because the upper level is missing a couple windows,” add Lisa.
“Oh, it smells like urine up here,” said Alison as she cleared the last step. “Is there a bathroom?” asked Lisa still a few steps behind. “Yes,” replied Alison. “Is it better than the one downstairs?” questioned Lisa. Alison took a quick look. “No!” she replied. Just as Lisa crested the final step, she noted the same thing Alison did. “I smell urine,” she said. “Oh, the fuck do you ever,” Alison said, noting that the smell was exceptionally strong. Lisa took a few steps and looked into the back portion of the house and then refused to step foot in there. “People lived here in March?” Alison kept questioning. Lisa was now standing to the right of the stairs with her back against the wall. “I have a lot of anxiety right now,” she said. “I normally don’t get anxiety but…” she trailed off. Sheena took the opportunity to venture in to the back rooms, but comes back when the alarm on her phone went off. Before she could even come up the steps from the back room, Lisa was startled. “Did you see that?” she questioned loudly. “I did!” exclaimed Sheena. “Something pushed me!” Lisa proclaimed. “I seen an outline of something, glowing,” add Sheena. “Yeah!” agreed Lisa. “At your butt level,” Sheena described, indicating that was she saw as at the backside of Rachel, who was facing away from them, but beside Lisa. “It pushed me,” Lisa said adamantly. “I looked like white hair,” Sheena continued to described. “Oh my gosh, I am getting goosebumps,” said Sheena. “It pushed me,” Lisa repeated. “It was right here, and it floated,” Sheena described. Sadly, she was not recording or taking photos at that time. “I don’t really want to go in any bedrooms,” said Alison. “I went in all of them,” said Sheena. “I feel very disoriented up here,” Lisa stated. Alison agreed. Something was definitely off-kilter on the second level. “My head feels very disoriented,” Lisa continued. Looking to her right, Lisa pointed to the bedroom located beside the bathroom. “I feel that one is the one the person hung themselves in,” she said. Rachel took a quick look in. “Like I cannot believe the amount of anxiety I am feeling. Like I am not…” Lisa trailed off. “That one room, I want to cry in. I am so sad in that room,” she continued, indicating that the room to her left was the room with the heavy feeling. The team then made their way to the front room. “This room, I am uneasy. I am still filled with anxiety,” said Lisa. “Was this an estate sale?” she asked. “I don’t know,” answered Rachel. “Don’t touch me!” Lisa yelled out. It as clear that someone unseen had touched her. It didn’t seem to phase the team and they continued on. “Anything recent, so 1950s to now, I don’t know,” said Rachel. “Bed bugs can’t live in a house with no furniture?” Lisa asked, completely changing the subject. “Pretty sure they need a source of food and warmth to survive,” replied Rachel. The team then turned around to make their way back to the top of the staircase. “I really think everyone should be careful by these stairs,” said Lisa, who then gave Rachel shit for getting too close. Back at the top of the stairs, Lisa was pretty sure she knew where the urine smell is coming from. “Somebody has pissed in this room,” she said, pointing to the room at the very top right of the stairs. “Like it can’t be the bathroom,” she added. “I feel like, in this whole house, especially upstairs, anxiety,” she continued. Getting a little curious, Lisa now questioned Sheena was in the back rooms. “What’s back there?” she asked. “It’s a room with two smaller rooms on the sides and stairs that go down,” Sheena described. “I don’t want to go back there,” stated Lisa. “The two rooms have angled ceilings,” added Sheena. “I have no interest in going back there at all,” Lisa said adamantly. “Are you seeing anything or feeling?” questioned Sheena. “I don’t want to go there,” Lisa said. The conversation was quickly dropped. “I don’t feel so bad anymore, now that I am here,” Rachel said, to liven the mood. Alison and Sheena both agreed that they felt fine as well. Lisa walked over the room beside the bathroom. “This is definitely the room. I can feel it,” she said. “I feel very choked,” she described. “Did they hang somebody or did somebody hang them?” asked Sheena. “Hung themselves,” answered Lisa. “I feel like at any moment, I am going to collapse,” added Lisa. Rachel had since ventured into the room to take a look at the closet, where Lisa was sure someone had hung themselves. “Oh, they used hockey sticks as rungs in here!” she said loudly. “I thought so!” replied Sheena. “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle,” Lisa added. “You could definitely hang yourself in that closet,” Rachel said as she rejoined the team. “I think you would get a lot of activity in here,” Lisa said indicating that she felt that that particular room was active. Moving back closer to the top of the stairs, the team couldn’t get over the overwhelming smell of urine. “The pissy smell in there is an accumulation of piss,” Lisa said. “Cat piss?” questioned Rachel. “No, no. This is Human,” replied Lisa. “It smells human,” added Alison. “We need to ask them who they bought it from and why did they leave,” said Rachel. “I almost feel like if it wasn’t an estate sale, then they moved because they could no longer do it on their own,” said Lisa. “And I feel like there was roommates?” Lisa said questioningly. “Could be why the doors have locks,” Alison said, pointing out that two of the three bedrooms doors had deadbolt locks on the outside. “So, here’s the question, why are the locks on the outside? What did they not want out? People or dead things?” Rachel questioned. “I hear people,” Alison answered. “Cause with those type of locks, you can lock someone in,” she added. “You know the burpy feeling you feel before you throw up? That’s what I was feeling early,” said Lisa. “Are you picking up like it was a half-way house?” Rachel then questioned. “Yeah, like a rooming house,” Lisa said. The team then decided to head back downstairs and catch up with the homeowners and Ryan. “Hey, you can tell there was a runner on the stairs,” Lisa said as the team descended.
“What are you thinking Lisa?” Alison questioned as the team and the homeowners stood in the back kitchen. “Well, I can tell you this. My husband messaged and asked when I would be home and I replied ‘not soon enough’,” she answered. “The bedroom, upstairs beside the bathroom. Someone hung themselves,” she continued. “Okay,” replied Cindy. “For sure. In the closet. I won’t go in the back part,” added Lisa. “This back part?” Cindy questioned, pointing up. “Yes,” replied Lisa. “I will tell you that I was pushed upstairs. Like I lost my balance,” she continued. “Really? Wow!” exclaimed Cindy. “And you want to stay here after dark,” she questionable stated. “Well, you know, we like to think we are safe with a retired…” “I’m the first one out!” exclaimed Ryan, cutting Lisa off. Everyone laughed. “It will be an interesting night for sure,” said Lisa. “Was this an estate sale?” she then asked Cindy and Fred. “No,” answered Fred. “It was one of those ‘We buy any house’ sign on a pole sale. They came in, cleaned it up and we bought it from them,” he added. “They did such a great job,” Lisa said sarcastically. “Oh yeah, this is cleaned-ish,” added Fred. Cindy then shows the team the things that they found around the yard after a friend of theirs came by with a metal detector. Old pennies from 1876, 1909 and 1915, gun stock and a picture locket had been uncovered. “Was this a rooming house?” Lisa asked. Cindy was unsure, but was told that it was an old Stagecoach transfer house. However, when Rachel had contacted the local historical society, they said that this building would have never been a transfer or stop because of its location. “Could be other reasons why they were stopping here a lot,” added Rachel. The team then questioned the locks on two of the bedroom doors. “There were no little kids here. There was an older woman. She would wander around. That’s probably why they put the fence up too. They had a dog,” Fred said, describing the previous owners. “I never saw her,” he added. “Someone got sick,” said Lisa. “I saw a woman her once,” stated Cindy. “There was a Dutch family who lived here before,” added Fred. “It feels like a stroke,” Lisa blurted out. “Well have fun!” Cindy jokingly said as she headed outside. The team followed to discuss a bit more about the outside of the house and the property. “What do you think?” Rachel asked Lisa. “I don’t like it,” she replied. “What is the one room that smells like pee though? It’s like they peed on the walls,” she added. Cindy had an explanation for the urine smell. “We think that the former’s mother had dementia and they would lock her in. There are handprints al over the wall. Fred thinks it’s blood,” she said. “Funny enough, in the living room, I questioned if it was blood on the floor,” said Lisa. “We don’t know,” added Cindy. As the team and the homeowners talked about the land, something caught Fred’s attention in the dirt pile. He reached down and pulled out a large steak knife. “Um, random,” Rachel said with a slight worry. “Oh, we’ll be taking this with us,” said Cindy. “Well, that could have come in handy,” Ryan added with a laugh. The team, Cindy and Fred continued to talk and joked about how turning the building into an Air B&B would be interesting, especially if people wanted to stay at a haunted location. Soon, it was time for Fred and Cindy to be on their way. We said our goodbyes and good lucks. “And they’re leaving us,” said Rachel. “They probably think we are fucking crazy,” added Sheena. “I’m going to be 100% honest. If Ryan wasn’t here, I wouldn’t be here. I know you ladies have my back, but nope,” stated Lisa. “Fred had an experience,” said Ryan. “They found the door open about a week ago and he dreaded going upstairs. He had an overwhelming feeling something was up there and refused to go up there,” he described. Just then Rachel’s phone dinged. She received a random push notification from an app on her phone. “Oh. I like when Discovery Plus sends me notification. ‘Portals to Hell’. Great timing Discovery Plus, great timing,” she joked. “That room on the right, none of them can go in there,” said Ryan, telling the team about what Fred had told him. “And the only reason you have locks on the outside, is to contain,” he added.
The team decided that it would be a good time to take a walk around the house. Located on 96 acres, the team decided that they would just walk around the house and to the fields. “There is definitely a lot of residual,” Lisa said as she walked past the house to the back. The team made their way to the edge of the grass. “This goes all the way back,” Rachel pointed out. “Its definitely quiet when we stop moving,” noted Ryan. “Its that quiet were you know something is waiting for you,” Rachel added. “It’s the calm before the storm,” said Lisa. After a few moments, the team turned around and made their way back towards the house. Lisa stopped under a tree and seemed to be staring off, like she was intently listening to something. “You okay?” asked Ryan. “Yeah,” replied Lisa. “Hearing something?” Alison asked. “Whatcha hearing?” inquired Rachel. “Just chatter. It’s definitely in a language I don’t understand,” answered Lisa. “Well in the 50s, the people who lived here had some interesting names,” said Rachel. “Like what kind of last name? Because they said someone of Dutch descendant lived here,” said Ryan. Rachel attempted to pronounce the last names of the previous owners/tenants. “I would say Dutch, possibly,” she added. “I feel like there was some kind of gambling or something here,” said Lisa and they got closer to the house. “And the closer I get, the dread…” she said trailing off. The team decided to head towards the truck to gather the equipment. “Just remember, if you guys run out of here, there’s that ditch,” Sheena joked. “You’ll remember real quick,” added Ryan. “I can’t believe people were living here three months ago,” Alison said in disbelief. As the team gathered the equipment from the truck, Ryan was sure something was amiss. “I think it may be my eyes playing tricks on me, or the angle, but those curtains on the upper right look like they’ve been moving,” he said. This caused everyone to look up to the window he was pointing at. “Yup,” replied Lisa. “Like they have settled in a different position than a moment ago. I don’t know if it is just my eyes,” Ryan said. “Nope, they moved. They were open all way,” Lisa noted. Ryan continued to wrack his brain over the curtains. “I don’t know what to make of that,” he said. “The back of my head feels funny,” Lisa stated. “Now what could that be an indication of?” questioned Ryan. “I’m not sure,” responded Lisa. “You’re really bothered by this place,” he said to her. “Yup,” she answered. “That kind of scares me,” he said with a worrisome tone. “We’re safe. I got us protected,” she assured. “It’s the unknown out here,” he added. “I think something tragic happened in that first room; the living room,” said Lisa. “Like you mean a homicide?” questioned Ryan. “It looks like its clearly recent. At least since they lasted washed the floors, so like 20 years ago,” Lisa replied.
The team was now back in the house and getting ready to start the investigation. “It’s very musty,” Ryan noted. “It smells more like stale cigarettes than I anticipated,” Lisa added. Ryan then headed the front room to check out what Lisa was questioning. “Quite possible to be honest with you,” he said as he examined the stain on the floor. “It’s just like… I don’t know,” said Lisa. “This is quite interesting,” added Ryan. Lisa then tried to describe what she thought it was. “I don’t know what this is. This could be a head and body,” she said as she pointed out the outline of the stain. “It could be. With the way the floor slopes. You would get what you would see here,” said Ryan. “I see an older couch with the wooden frames. I feel an older person fell and hit their head,” Lisa described. “I can’t believe someone lived in here three months ago,” Ryan said. “Gives you the heebie jeebies just standing here,” he added. Sheena was now inquiring about the interesting stain. “Like a death print?” she questioned. “This is not a death print,” Lisa said. Lisa then indicated that her foot was cramping and it was a strange, out of place feeling. The team decided to head back to the Kitchen area to finish setting up and gathering equipment. “What is on these cupboards?” questioned Lisa. “Ketchup. Well, I hope that’s ketchup,” said Rachel. “Ryan, is this blood spatter or BBQ sauce,” Lisa asked. “Or ketchup?” added Rachel. “It’s food product,” answered Ryan as he examined the one cupboard door. As the team began to adjust the equipment, Lisa wasn’t thrilled about her flashlight. “I feel like my flashlight isn’t bright enough,” she said. Rachel also noted that, even though she was wearing her glasses, she was still having a hard time seeing. Lisa thought that it would be a good time to turn on her ghost box. Immediately a female voice was heard – ‘Fuck You’. “Wow. I just turned it on and it says fuck you,” said Lisa. “I heard that!” exclaimed Rachel. “Do you like us in here?” Rachel asked. But there as no reply. “I just got really chilly, really goose-bumpy,” said Rachel. “Is there somebody in here with us right now?” asked Rachel. A male voice was heard through the ghost box – ‘Murray’. A second male voice was also heard through the ghost box – ‘Lisa’. “It just said Lisa,” stated Lisa. “Whose house is this?” Rachel asked next. A male voice was heard through the ghost box – ‘His’. “Are we safe here?” she asked next. A male voice was heard through the ghost box – ‘Nope’. A second male voice was heard through the ghost box – ‘Three’. “Can you talk one at a time,” Lisa asked. “What room is not the safest?” Rachel asked next. An older, female voice was heard through the ghost box – ‘Upstairs Right’. “I thought I heard upstairs,” said Rachel. A male voice was then heard through the ghost box – ‘Listen’. “Listen,” repeated Lisa. “What are we listening for?” asked Rachel. A male voice was heard through the ghost box – ‘Me’. “Me. That was creepy. I just got goosebumps. Look, my little hairs are standing up,” Rachel said, pointing to her arm. “Me, what’s your name?” asked Rachel. No reply was heard. “What’s the man’s name?” she asked. A male voice was heard over the ghost box – ‘Run’. “Run,” repeated Rachel. The team then made their way upstairs to check out the rooms and really get a feel for the location. “My lungs are burning,” said Lisa as she walked the upper hallway towards the front bedroom. It was then noted that a bunch of cobwebs on the wall were moving. Everyone questioned if there as a draft or any type of air movement. Other than us walking, there was no breeze outside, or any air movement that we could feel. The team entered the bedroom on the right of the stairs and examined the walls. They were covered in handprints and what looked like to be various bodily fluids. There were nail marks all over the wooden door, as if the person who was locked inside was trying to claw their way out. It was a heartbreaking scene and one that many of us could not wrap our heads around. How could someone do this? The panic that this individual must have felt, and the sounds that would have accompanied their attempts to escape is something that no one should experience.
The team headed back down to the front kitchen area to gather other equipment and prepare for the live video. “Next time we come to a place like this, we should bring lawn chairs,” said Rachel. “And Lysol wipes,” added Alison. “Body sanitizer,” added Lisa. “Pressure washer,” Sheena added. “A Priest,” Ryan chimed in. Rachel began to set up the spot light, but noticed that no matter what the brightness level was, everything still seemed so dark. After troubleshooting, Rachel turned up the brightness on her phone to the highest level. It should be noted that Rachel never touches the settings on her phone. These setting have always been the same and consistent for every live video she has ever done. Once this was all sorted out, it was now time to sign on and start the Live Video. Watch to see what happened!

Just as quickly as we ended that video, the team began to feel tremendous amounts of anxiety and nervousness. It was if the house was trying to tell them that it had had enough and wanted them to leave. The team was no longer welcome. The feeling was hard to put a name to and the team couldn’t figure out why the feeling was so persistent. “Did you hear that?” questioned Alison. “Yes. I don’t know what that is. It’s weird,” replied Ryan. “It’s like laboured breathing,” he added. “That’s how I felt earlier. Remember I said that,” said Lisa. “That’s really fucking creepy. It sounds like laboured breathing,” added Ryan. “It sounds like the house is breathing. It’s all around you,” he continued. “I feel like I want to jump out of my fucking skin,” he said. “That is how I felt the entire time I’ve been here. I just want to go,” said Lisa. “I don’t like this place at all. We have to get going,” said Ryan with a sense of urgency in his voice. Rachel tried to hurriedly pack things away. The feeling of dread was beginning to grow stronger. “I’m sick to my stomach in here,” said Ryan. “I feel it too, all of a sudden,” added Alison. The team rushed to leave the house. “Thank you for sharing with us,” Lisa said as we exited the side door. “You’re not following us home!” she yelled back into the dark, empty house. The team hastily made their way back to the truck. “Did you hear that?” Lisa asked Rachel. “No, I didn’t hear anything,” she answered back. “My heart is beating so fast, Rachel. I want to cry. That is how scared I am right now,” said Lisa. Sheena was concerned. “Are you alright?” she asked Lisa. “No, I am not,” answered Lisa. “You cannot follow us home. You have to stay here,” she yelled into the dark. “What did you hear? I didn’t want to hear anything,” Rachel asked and stated. “I heard breathing,” Lisa said. “Yeah, we’ve been hearing it,” replied Sheena. “No, out here,” said Lisa, as she demonstrated that she heard heavy breathing, just now, in her ear, as if someone was right over her shoulder. Rachel then points out that it looks like the one curtain at the front in moving. Ryan also notes that he sees something similar. “Yup, I’m done!” he exclaimed as the team hurriedly pack the equipment into the truck and jumped inside the cab. As Rachel drove the team away from the location, back down the back roads of Northumberland County, she began to understand why they felt the way they did in that house. “That house,” she said. “That house was alive. Those walls were living and breathing. It is its own entity…” she trailed off. Not a single person disagreed.
If that house could talk, the stories it would tell would haunt you.
The team would like to return one day, but for now, we need to better understand what was going on and process everything that happened. This was one location that we cannot shake, but we know it has more to tell us. Hopefully next time, the house will accept us and share more of her story.
