Proctor House - Brighton
This was an amazing tour, well worth the drive to see!! Not only did we learn the truth about The Proctor House, but we also managed to squash a few nasty rumors. The staff at The Proctor House are not only informative, but friendly, down to earth people who have several stories to share about amazing and strange things that happen there while taken care of the old house.
Does The Proctor House have a ghost? YES! In fact, they have more than one not only roaming around the home, but the grounds as well.
Does The Proctor House award anyone $300 if they can stay the entire night in the house? NO! The Proctor House does not allow anyone to spend the night as there is nothing evil within its walls, nor do they have the funds to award such a prize.
OUR EXPERIENCE
We were fortunate enough to obtain an evening, after hour tour of The Proctor House. We entered through the doors that were closest to the parking lot and in to the Kitchen. This is where we met our tour guides, Roy and Anna.
As soon as Brenda walked in, she knew there was paranormal activity instantly. Rachel and Brenda stood next to the long wooden kitchen table listening to Roy tell the history of the Proctors. Anna led Jay and Mike in further with the camera equipment. While the two girls were listening to Roy tell his stories, one of the kitchen chairs had pulled out on its own, right into the back of Brenda. She felt as if someone was trying to sit at the table and she was in their way. Brenda also sensed that someone had somehow broke or crushed their right foot. They were pacing constantly back and forth along the side of the kitchen next to the cellar door.
From the kitchen, we continued into the Parlor Room. Although we did not see any spirits on the main level, they definitely made themselves known to all of us. In this room, Brenda could see two huge, winged back chairs with a small round wooden table in front of the fireplace. She saw the table as handcrafted, in cherry wood. Although she sensed the presence of a woman, Brenda could not make out the details. It was like they were feeling us out to see what we were up to. The spirits wanted to know why we were there, knowing we weren’t the average tour group.
We continued into the front Hallway. As Brenda stood in at the front doors in the middle of the hall, she could feel her blood turning cold as ice, as if she had died. This was definitely a cold spot in the house. We then found out this was where one of the Proctor’s sons had died from a heart attack. So, we moved quickly from that area and in to the Sitting Room.
Brenda could sense a presence coming from the staircase as we entered the Sitting Room. She could hear whispering as well, but was unable to make out what was being said. She sensed a lot of anger in this room and could smell something sweet and bitter. The smell was that of imported cigars that were only brought out on special occasions. We moved into a small office, which used to be the Library. Brenda was receiving messages that this was someone’s bedroom, but could not sort out the details of which it belonged to, other than the fact that it appeared to be a female’s. Anna (our tour guide) then noticed that the eyeglasses were moved from the sitting room to the table under the mirror in the hallway. Not knowing how they got there, Roy simply returned them to their proper location. From the library, we walked up the main staircase to the second floor. Brenda could feel more activity here and it seemed liked the higher they went the more intense the pressure was. Rachel, Brenda and Roy went to the rear of the house so Brenda could stop to use the facilities. On her way up the stairs, she started to have various bladder pains and suddenly had to race to the nearest facility. Afterward, Roy showed us the Farm Hand’s room and then the double story Outhouse. We then all met up in the Maid’s Quarters.
It was here Brenda saw the three girls. Roy was describing strange occurrences from this room. One specific story was of one morning when they entered the room and found a blanket on the floor at the foot of the bed. Unknowingly to them or other staff members was how it had got there. At the moment Roy completed his story, a girl’s voice said defensively, ”We had to cover the body. That is why we moved it”. The voice came from beside Brenda, which caught her off guard and startled her somewhat. The three spirits in this room were observing us in the same fashion that people observe animals in the zoo. Brenda was picking up messages, which felt as if they were telling her the truth, even though she could not feel whatever or whoever was talking to her. This voice was separate from the girl who told her about the blanket on the floor.
After we left the Maid’s Quarters, we walked through a small doorway that led us into the family’s main sleeping quarters. We started in a room to the left of the hall, which would have been one of the daughter’s rooms. In here, Brenda was drawn to closet door. With Roy’s permission, she slowly opened it. She kept feeling that someone was going to be inside, but found no one. Someone or something was in that room with us. They were only studying us, not making themselves visible or giving signs that they were indeed there. It was only through Brenda’s abilities that she sensed watchful eyes upon them.We continued across the hall and into a huge room. Brenda was afraid to open the closet in this room after feeling heat from behind the door, however cold to the touch from channeling the energies in the home. Jay and Mike had to open the door and look inside. Even with permission, Brenda just couldn’t do it. While standing in the same location, Brenda could see someone who had broken his or her neck. We were then informed that someone on the homestead had indeed done so. His body had been laid in this very room, but it was unknown if this person was already dead or if he had died after being put in here. While walking around the room, Brenda stopped at the windows that overlooked the front lawn, and placed her right hand on the pane to peer out. Brenda could feel a woman’s hand where she had placed hers, also peering outside and waiting for something. She was innocent with thought, but was so sad, sad enough that Brenda wanted to cry. The woman wouldn’t tell Brenda what she waiting for, but she felt how torn she was inside. There are other stories that belong to this room, but we don’t want to spoil them, you’ll just have to take the tour to learn what else took place there!!
From the large room we walked down the hallway and into the Master Bedroom. What a rush of senses all of us felt when we entered this room. Brenda could see the area in which Mr. Proctor himself paced back and forth. She was also experiencing all kinds of abdomen pain while standing in a specific spot in that room. Something interesting was before Rachel and Brenda entered the room, Jay and Mike were filming and snapping pictures and the closet door was shut, but when Jay and Mike joined us, the closet door was slightly open. Roy commented on how that door is always closed and preceded to shut it. Funny as it was, Brenda felt like she could stay and sleep there as if it were her own bedroom, yet when we walked into the room, she could definitely feel the temperature difference in comparison to the rest of the house. This room was already occupied!
Once we finished exploring the Master Bedroom, we were shown a tiny staircase that lead upwards to the Belvedere. Jay was there earlier and felt extremely uncomfortable, as if it was too crowded, and had to come down. Mike walked up with the camcorder and Brenda followed. We could feel great sorrow from an elderly woman. Brenda wanted to cry and felt that it was hard to breath. She even had goose bumps all over her body. Brenda indicated to Mike that she was experiencing difficulty breathing, so they exited the room. The stairs to the Belvedere are very steep, so if you get to see the awesome view…please be very careful.
After this, we went back through the Maid’s Quarters and down the back staircase to the Kitchen. We stood in the Kitchen for a while and listened to more strange stories from Roy and Anna. They even included stories from previous visitors who had also taken the tour.

Next was the Cellar. There was no paranormal activity here when we saw it, but there are many interesting things to discover down there!
Upon returning to the main floor we were able to revisit the Library, where Rachel, Roy, Anna, and Brenda heard the clinking of a spoon in a teacup. We were unable to determine where the sound was coming from, because we all heard it coming from different locations in the house.Once we concluded with the tour of the house, we had a tour of the grounds and the new barn/theatre. The Theatre was erected where the old Proctor Barn once stood. On our way to the barn, Brenda sensed a cutter sitting on the grass. Roy confirmed this could very well be true, as the location would have been directly in front of where the old barn doors would have stood. Although we felt no activity in the barn, Anna and Roy did tell some stories of spirits and things that have been seen around the grounds at night. Anna had one particularly interesting story that happened to herself, ask her what it was!
Our tour was finished. We had a great visit with Roy and Anna, said our goodbyes, and promised to come back to visit the cemetery. You must visit to hear the many stories for yourself! While you’re there take in a Show at their Theatre. Be sure to visit their website for show times and tour information.
