ST. MARYS MUSEUM
ST.MARYS, ONT
MAY 25, 2024
Driving west was a change for once, but driving this route was nothing new for Rachel. It was the same directions she would take to get to her happy place, Grand Bend. However, this weekend, the team wasn’t heading to Grand Bend, but a town just south of Stratford. Driving along the country roads, the sun finally shining after a morning of downpours, the temperature steadily increasing, Road Trip radio playing in the background, the team was discussing a variety of topics. After three roundabouts (why do these evil things exist anyways?), the team was on the final few kilometres of their road trip. Soon the welcome signs and views of the downtown buildings were in view. The team had arrived to St. Marys, Ontario.
First order of business was to nourish ourselves after the two-hour drive. We headed to Water Street and ate at Gilly’s Pub House. We were not disappointed! Not only was the food delicious, but the restaurant is located in the old Post Office and Customs building. After our meal, we headed to the location that we would be spending the evening at. The sun was shining and the large limestone building stood before us. We had arrived at the St. Marys Museum.
Previously referred to as the “Castle in the Bush”, the limestone house was the largest home in the village. George Tracy had the house constructed in 1854 to replace his log cabin that was nearby. George, his wife Elizabeth, and five of their six children lived in the house for only four years, before moving back to the States where their oldest child was living at the time. The house was then purchased by Daniel McDougal. Mr. McDougall was a successful businessman and Justice of the Peace. He named the house Cloudesdel Hall, which was a family name. Daniel and his wife Hannah had a total of 16 children (five appear to have died in infancy). When Daniel passed away in 1870, the house was inherited by second oldest son, Joseph. Joseph McDougall was also a businessman – owning an iron foundry and hardware store. He lived at the house with wife, Isabella, and their six children. Upon his death in 1878, the house was purchased by John Weir. The Weir family was the most prominent family to own the house and landscaped the grounds. John’s wife, Fanny, was previously married and had three children. When her first husband, John Adam, died at the age of 30 (no cause listed), he left her with his business and the four plots of land that were in her name. Fanny ran the business (a hotel) and built houses on the four lots. She lived in one of the houses, and rented out the others. When she remarried, John became a joint owner, but Fanny maintained her authority over them. John’s brother, William, also lived in the house. William Weir was the Mayor on St Marys in 1916-1917. He was never married and one of the last owners of the house. William died in 1926 at the age of 77. The last person to own the home and property was John Grieve Lind. Mr. Lind was one of the Founders of St Marys Cement. He purchased the property in 1926 with the Rotary Club. Eventually the house would be turned into apartments. In 1959, the Queen Alexandra Women’s Institute acquired the house and displayed artifacts as part of their 50th anniversary. By 1981, the Town had taken over the museum operations and the house was designated a historic site under the Ontario Heritage Act. The Museum converted the house back to an original layout; however, some rooms still remain a mystery as to what and where they were located. Today, the museum has a variety of exhibits and programs for everyone to enjoy. The surrounding land is a beautifully maintained park with a playground and a splash pad. Clearly this area is well loved by the community and it shows.

Prior to our arrival, Alison and Kaz had shared with the team things they were picking up on. Both of them picked up on a young man in the upper left window at the front of the house. They also picked up on a very stern woman. Alison felt that she was stern, but for good reason. Kaz’s version was a little different. The woman was stern with her because she referred to Kaz as a witch and did not want her in the house. Kaz had also had very prominent visions of old steam engine trains, and labourers working the land. It is known that St Marys was a junction for two lines of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway.
We were met at the doors by our host for the evening, Emily. Emily welcomed us in to the museum and gave us a tour. The museum is grand in size, and the rooms are beautifully curated. All the windows and fireplaces are original, as well as the Grand Staircase. Emily indicated to us that the Textile room on the second floor was once said to be a music room. It was a large room, with high ceiling and five windows that would let an abundant of light into the room. There would have been a piano in it at one point as well. When the house was converted into apartments, a small staircase was added (but is no longer there). Today, the curtains are drawn and the room is dark to preserve the collections that sit amongst the shelving units. The team received the grand tour of the house from attic to basement, giving us a chance to look at everything and make decisions on where we would focus our investigation on. Once the walk thru concluded, we headed outside to walk the grounds. During our outside walk, we decided that we would start on the second floor first. When it came time to the live video, it was decided to show the dining room and front parlor room, and move to the second floor. Lastly, we decided to try a dual Estes Method on the second level, in the back room that was set up to look like a schoolhouse. With the investigation plan in place, the team was ready to get the investigation started.
Rachel set up the SLS camera, and with the other equipment ready to go, the team headed upstairs to the second level. “Did you pick up anything?” asked Alison. “Nope, Nothing,” replied Rachel and she did a secondary scan with the SLS camera. With nothing mapping on the camera, Rachel placed it down and began to set up other equipment. “I’m getting anxiety in this room,” described Alison as she stood just inside the doorway of the Textile room. “Surprised because it was described as a happy room. Performance anxiety?” she questioned. “It’s extremely quiet. I think we should put something on. See if they want to talk,” she added. It was decided that the EMF trip wire would be placed from the Textile room, down the hall and into the bedroom. The Music box was set up at the top of the stairs, facing away from everyone. The REM pod was placed in the bedroom. The EMF sensor pod was placed on a chair in the Textile room. The Dead Bell was placed on a small table outside of the Textile room, with the K2 Meter beside it. Alison was operating the Ovilus, while Rachel was in operations of the Ghost box. No sooner had we had everything set up, the EMF trip wire activated. “Oh! The lights just went! The lights just went!” exclaimed Kaz. “I know! I saw it out of the corner of my eye!” Alison added, excitedly. “Thank you for setting our light off,” she said. “Nothing we have will hurt you or harm you in any way. Just lets us know you’re hanging around with us,” she added. The team waited for a response, but all was quiet. “I just don’t feel well up here. I feel better in the bottom part,” said Alison. “I wonder if someone hung themselves here,” she questioned. “Whoever was here before, can you come back up the stairs, please?” asked Kaz. “We are excited to talk to you,” added Alison. Everything remained quiet. “Is Mary the name of the lady?” Kaz asked Rachel. “No. It’s Fanny,” she answered. “What’s her last name?” “Weir,” replied Rachel. The Ovilus 5 spoke – ‘Wagon’, ‘Year’ (after reviewing this, was Fanny trying to get her name to appear through the Ovilus?). “Year of the wagon? What year was that?” asked Kaz. The EMF trip wire activated. “Oooh!” yelled Kaz. “The lights just went! Thank you! Thank you so much,” exclaimed Alison. “Oh, I got the chilly’s,” said Rachel. “They even went off in there,” Alison said, referring to the set of EMF trip wire lights that were in the archives room. “Mrs. Weir, as you here with us?” asked Kaz. “Mrs. Weir, if you’re here with us, can you make our light…” Alison was unable to finish her sentence as the Dead Bell activated. “Go off again,” she finally got to finish. Without hesitation the EMF Trip wire activated. “Oh! Thank you, Mrs. Weir! Nice to meet you,” said Alison. “Thank you for allowing us in your home,” added Kaz. “Mrs. Weir, we were told that the room across the hall from me was a music room. Is that correct?” asked Kaz. Everything remained quiet. “Mrs. Weir, are you still here?” asked Paula. It was then that Alison indicated that she was positive she had just heard a woman laugh. Kaz was convinced she had heard a disembodied conversation, but downstairs. Rachel indicated she heard nothing, like normal. “Mrs. Weir, you have a beautiful home and they did a nice job restoring it after the apartments,” said Alison. “Mrs. Weir did you like it whey they changed it to an apartment building?” asked Kaz. Once again, everything remained quiet. “Is Mrs. Weir the one that built all the houses?” Alison asked Rachel. “Yes,” she answered. No sooner than she had said the word, the EMF Trip wire activated. “Ha!” laughed Alison. “That’s a shrewd businesswoman for the time we are talking about,” she added. “That’s why she connects with you. You are independent, you got your own thing going on and you take care of it,” Kaz said to Alison. “Well, you too,” Alison responded. “She didn’t want me here. She thinks I’m a witch,” replied Kaz. The Dead Bell activated and everyone laughed as it seemed to be an acknowledgement to Kaz’s statement. “Yes, I am Mrs. Weir. I am a good witch. I am not a witch like you think so, Mrs. Weir. Things have changed over time,” she said. “Things have changed in our time,” added Alison. “Mrs. Weir, where would you like us to go in your beautiful home? Would you like us to go into the bedroom? Downstairs?” asked Kaz. The EMF sensor pod that was sitting in the Textile room activated. “Oh, that was the EMF sensor,” said Rachel. The team was debating and discussing Mrs. Weir as they made their way towards the Textile room. “She might still be here because her husband remarried,” said Rachel. “Did her son get everything or her husband?” asked Alison. Rachel the told the team that upon the death of her first husband, Fanny Weir obtained her first husband’s tavern business and all the plots of land because their son was a minor and was not legally allowed to have such an inheritance at his age. Her son only obtained his inheritance upon turning legal age. “Her son got the tavern downtown and the house she was living in…” Rachel said, as she was cut off by the Dead Bell activating. “…Before she moved into here,” Rachel tried to say, but was once again disrupted by the Dead Bell activating. “I’m on the right track,” joked Rachel. “Rachel is a really good researcher and thank you for answering,” said Alison. The Ovilus 5 was heard – ‘Chest’. “Oh, in the other room. The trunks,” Kaz pointed out. “Would you like us to go into the other room?” she asked. Without hearing an answer, the team entered the room. “I really don’t get the vibe that this was a music room. Like at all,” said Alison. The Ovilus 5 was heard – ‘Maybe’, ‘Puncture’. “Can you tell us what this room use to be?” asked Kaz. The Ovilus 5 was heard – ‘Robert’, ‘Drunk’, ‘Angle’. “Robert is drunk,” laughed Rachel. “Walking on an angle,” joked Alison. “Who’s Robert?” Kaz questioned. “Ya, who’s Robert?” Rachel added.
At the time, Rachel had not realized that Robert was a significant name to the property. Robert Barbour was the architect of the house, as well as the architect of the four houses that Fanny Weir had built on her plots of land. Was Robert drunk and built something on an angle?
The Ovilus 5 was heard – ‘Fire’, ‘Ahead’. “Fire place or was there a fire?” asked Kaz. The EMF Trip Wire activated. “The lights again,” pointed out Alison. “There was a fire here?” asked Kaz. No response was received. “Are we still speaking to Mrs. Weir? Or are we speaking to Robert? Or someone else?” she asked. All remained quiet. “Did they leave?” questioned Alison. “I don’t feel joy in this room. I don’t feel joy, happy, light. I would be surprised,” described Alison. “Did something happen in this room?” asked Kaz. The Ovilus 5 was heard – ‘Fury’, ‘Developed’, ‘Witch’. “You’ve made somebody angry,” laughed Rachel. “It’s not my intention!” exclaimed Kaz. The Ovilus 5 was heard – ‘Mop’. “Ha! Get on your broom,” joked Rachel. The Ovilus 5 was heard – ‘West’, ‘Foreign’. “You could be the wicked witch of the west,” Rachel chuckled. “But I’m not!” exclaimed Kaz. “You’re more like Mary Poppins, than witchy,” said Alison. Feeling singled out, Kaz wanted to know why. “Have I made someone angry with my presence? I honestly didn’t mean to,” she said. Everything remained quiet. It was decided it would be good time to turn on the Ghost box.

It was decided it would be good time to turn on the Ghost box.
Rachel turned on the Ghost Box and before anyone could ask anything a male voice was heard through it – ‘Really’. “Who are we speaking to?” asked Kaz. “What’s in the back?” asked Alison, referring to the back of the archive room. A male voice was heard through the ghost box – ‘Harry/Larry’. “Larry?” questioned Alison. “Harry?” questioned Rachel. “There is no Harry,” she added. The EMF Trip Wire activated. “Who is the gentleman that just came through? Can you tell us your name please?” asked Kaz. A male and female voice was heard through the ghost box, but it was indiscernible. “Maybe it was a woman?” quizzed Rachel. A female voice was head through the Ghost Box – “Edith’. “Edith,” Alison repeated. A male voice was heard through the ghost box, again undiscernible (going through the audio, Rachel is convinced it says ‘How’s your weekend going?’). “Mrs. Weir, are you still here?” asked Alison. A voice as head through the Ghost Box – ‘Do you really have to?”. “Maybe they don’t like us call her out,” said Rachel. “Who else would like to speak to us?” asked Kaz. Rachel was convinced she heard the name George come through the ghost box, but it wasn’t captured on audio. “Mr. Tracy, are you here?” asked Kaz. A voice was heard through the Ghost Box – ‘Take this.’ “Mr. Tracy is that you touching my back?” asked Kaz. Rachel was also feeling a change. “My arm is all goose-bumpy. The little hairs on my arm are standing up,” Rachel said, holding her arm up in the air. “Is there somewhere you want us to go?” asked Alison. “Would you like us to go another area of the house?” added Kaz. A female voice was heard through the Ghost box – ‘Romeo’. The Dead Bell also activated. “Are they trying to get us out of here by using the stuff out there?” Alison questioned. “Well, I haven’t heard the REM pod yet,’ said Rachel. A male voice was heard through the ghost box – ‘You’re avoiding’. “Don’t avoid it,” Rachel answered back. “Nothing we have here will hurt or harm you,” added Alison. “Can we go down to the bedroom?” asked Kaz. A voice was heard through the Ghost box – ‘What for’. “Cause Kaz and I seen a nice, young man there,” Alison replied. A voice as heard through the Ghost box – ‘Romantic feast’. “Romantic…In the bedroom,” Kaz repeated with a giggle. “Who is the young man in the bedroom that both Alison and I have seen?” she asked. A voice was heard through the Ghost box, but we couldn’t make out what was said. The EMF sensor pod activated. “What’s your name?” asked Kaz. “The gentleman in the bedroom, what is your name?” she clarified. A voice was heard through the Ghost box – ‘Hi’ ‘John’. “Which John? John what’s your last name?” Rachel asked. No response was heard. “What’s your last name John?” she asked again. This time a female voice as heard through the Ghost box – ‘It’s Nirvana’. “Smells like teen spirit,” joked Rachel. A voice was heard through the Ghost box – ‘No’. “We are going down to the bedroom. Would you like to come with us?” asked Kaz. A female voice as heard through the Ghost box – ‘Turn the mattress’’. “Who do you want in the bedroom?” Rachel asked next. A voice was heard through the Ghost box – ‘Good to go’. “What’s going to happen in the bedroom?” questioned Kaz. A female voice was heard through the Ghost box – ‘Naked’. Kaz continued to ask questions. “Who’s going to get naked?” A voice was heard through the Ghost box – ‘Servants’. “I heard the servants,” said Rachel. A voice was heard through the Ghost box – ‘Get Out’. “Are you asking us to get out?” A female voice was heard through the Ghost box, but was indiscernible. A male voice was also heard through the Ghost box – ‘That’s a pretty’. “Who’s pretty?” asked Kaz. A voice was heard through the Ghost box – ‘You need to’. “What do we need to do?” she asked. A voice was heard through the Ghost box – ‘You need to’. “Let’s go down to the other room,” Rachel suggested. Everyone agreed.
The team made their way down to the bedroom where Alison and Kaz had seen and felt the presence of a young man. As the team entered the room, a male voice was heard through the Ghost box – ‘Hello Sweetheart’. “Did you call us a sweetheart?” asked Kaz. A male voice was heard through the Ghost box – ‘Me’, ‘No’. A female voice was then heard through the ghost box – ‘Get in position.’ ‘The four of you’. “Get in position?” questioned Kaz. “The four of you?” Rachel said quizzically. “This has turned the table very fast,” laughed Rachel. “We did get the sense that he was a good-looking man,” Alison tried to reason. “Whose bedroom would this have been?” asked Kaz. No response was heard. The team asked a few more questions but responses were heard or recorded. Kaz suddenly felt like someone brushed their fingers across her arm. “Who keeps touching my arm?” she asked. The Ovilus 5 was heard – ‘Devil’. “Your name please. What’s your name?” asked Rachel. Alison was beginning to feel really clammy. “Who’s in the room with us?” asked Rachel. A male voice as heard through the Ghost box – ‘Him’. “You asked us to come down here,” she said. A voice was heard through the Ghost box – ‘New York’. “Are you from the Tracy family?” asked Rachel. A voice was heard through the Ghost box – ‘I use to be’. “Are you from the McDougall family?” No response was heard or recorded. “Are you from the Weir family?” A male voice as heard through the Ghost Box – ‘Yup’. “Are you John or William?” No responses were heard or recorded. “William was the Mayor of St Marys. He never married,” said Rachel. Alison wondered if he was the good-looking man that she had seen in the room. “I do have a picture of him in my research,” said Rachel. Since no more responses were coming through the Ghost box and the other equipment sitting idle, the team decided to end their investigation of the second floor. While gathering up the equipment, Alison and Kaz took a look at the picture of William Weir and both concluded that was not the person they had saw (although the picture Rachel had was of William in his older years, it is still a possibility that he was presenting as a much younger version of himself).
The team headed back down to the main level and began to prepare for the Live video. Watch the video below to see what was streamed live that evening.

The team headed back down to the main level and began to prepare for the Live video. Watch the video below to see what was streamed live that evening.
During the live video, the SLS was mapping a figure in the dining room. Check out the video below for the raw, unedited SLS camera footage.
Once the live video was ended, the team remained in the schoolhouse exhibit room. It was decided that this room would be the best room to attempt a dual Estes Method. Once again Kaz and Alison volunteered to go under. Alison sat on one side of the room, while Kaz situated herself on the other side, diagonally from each other. Watch the video below to see how the dual Estes Method unfolded.
As the team was packing up equipment to leave, someone wanted to make sure that they were not going to be forgotten. As the team was talking to Emily, a large rolled up map that had been sitting in its spot for well over a year, came tumbling out and onto the floor. No one had been near this map, or the area that it had been sitting in. It was shocking and confusing all at once. With that, we said our goodbyes and headed out the door for the road trip home, but not without promising whomever it was that we would return to St. Marys sooner than later. Perhaps the map was a hint that we should visit Town Hall next? After all, isn’t that were maps of the town and other records are and were stored? Something to ponder.
Is the St. Marys Museum haunted? Well, there is definitely something going on there. We’ve concluded that there are a few, intelligent spirits still inhabiting the Castle in the Bush. First, we believe that Fanny Weir is still there. She’s the stern woman that both Alison and Kaz encountered. Fanny is still running the house with authority – nothing gets by her. We also believe that she is there because she is quite upset that her husband, John, remarried after her death. John remarried a woman name Sarah in 1906, six years after the death of Fanny. Fanny does not like this one bit and it quite peeved in her afterlife that her husband would find someone else. She didn’t mince her words when she was speaking Sarah, calling her names. We also believe that John and William Weir are there. They seem to like to argue with each other. Calling each other names, insulting one another and just being like your typical siblings. William Weir seems to be the more provocative one – he was very forthcoming with his choice of words and innuendos. It also seemed to us that Fanny was running the show for her brother-in-law. William Weir was an unmarried man, who held a significant status. For someone in his position, we are sure that women were very committed in trying to get with him (whether as a suitor, husband, or even just for the night). We feel that Fanny may have controlled this aspect of his life and made any woman who wanted something, to present themselves for his choosing. Again, this is only speculations from the responses and activity that we received during our investigation. We would love to know more about William Weir and the reason why he remained a single, unmarried man.
St Marys is a must visit location for anyone looking for a good road trip. Between the scenic drive, the delicious restaurants and the vast history, it is no wonder that it wants to share its stories with anyone who wants to listen.

We should also note that Margaret Weir, John and William's mother, also lived in the house with her sons. Could this be the woman that seemed to be organizing and telling us what to do? Is Margaret the one that was upset about John remarrying? Did she not like his second wife? We now have more questions to ask!
